I think for some of us, it is something you will understand and appreciate better once you have a "first hand" experience with them.

I am part of it. like years ago when the game was very active the duties of guilds were the hatchery and the commons. rarer cases people you met while questing. possibly with Pvp but i rarely traveled in that group to know. mostly it is a shared castle islands. the more the group pumps in azoth to unlock kiosks the better the rewards are. such as more azoth,special crafting stations and raids. also these are private meeting points. the main difference between this and meeting at someone else's castle is the person in question doesn't have to have a wizard online.
there are a lot of pros and cons to these guilds.
Do NOT meddle in the affairs of Dragons. for you are crunchy and good with ketchup
