National Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Monday, January 16th 2023

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday celebrates the life and legacy of a man who brought hope and healing to America. We commemorate as well the timeless values he taught us through his example — the values of courage, truth, justice, compassion, dignity, humility and service that so radiantly defined Dr. King’s character and empowered his leadership.

On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit.

I am blessed enough to have a very dear friend who knew Dr. King and walked in many of the marches he did, and sadly was there the day he was assassinated. He (My friend) is in his early 80's now and I call him every couple months to check up on him and listen to his incredible stories of the battles they fought and the victories they achieved. My friend fought a double battle as a Gay Black man and one of the things he keeps telling me was that Dr. King fought for everyone, his message was for everyone. Sure, he was primarily fighting the war for the rights and freedoms of the Black community, but he also stood for everyone.

This is one of those times when I remember one of my favorite quotes of Dr. King (Although there are so many quotes I love from him):

I pray we all strive to continue what he started and never give up until everyone is safe and free to be whoever they are.

God Bless Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and may we all continue to "serve" all of human kind as he challenged us all to do.
