      Decorating trends

I've been doing quite a few castle tours recently, and have noticed a couple of trends that I don't really care for. Along with blocking the fishing areas, these other trends seem questionable to me...

Making things larger - Quite often, it seems, castle magic users make everything around the entrance to their castle grow and grow and grow until the screen is filled with bushes and trees and stuff. Sometimes these things make my wizard stuck at the beginning of the tour. It is also coming to feel a bit claustrophobic when it happens.

Blocking the way - sometimes I find that the entrance to the castle is blocked (or the way to the free-item-giver), and we have to look for a teleporter or magic button to open then way. Some decorators put a sign to help, but often it's left up to the tourist to figure out how to get in.

Does anyone else mind it when the owner does these things?

      Re: Decorating trends

it's probably the main reason why I stopped castle tours.

If players want their castles to be evaluated, the least would be to allow visiting...

And the fun part is that some of those closed castles are rated pretty high.

      I agree with Willowdreamer.
I found that same thing doing Castle Tours. Takes all the fun out of it.
It's a shame really because I really enjoy seeing how creative some people are when decorating.
Why put your place up if your going to block us from being able to look around and enjoy all you've done.
When I visit one like that I don't even want to bother looking further.

      Re: Decorating trends

Most of these houses are attempting to route the player in a way they feel best portrays their creation. I too have found distaste for many houses which equate decorative appeal to gigantic size, and I also have known the frustration of being unable to rate a house due to lack of indoor access. However, for the most part, people who route the experience are creating their own entrance because the innate entrance possessed by the house does not match their goal for the house. Also, with the limit on item space, enlarging many items can be an essential way to create your own seamless settings that would otherwise be unachievable or consume too much item space.

So, while I agree that there are plenty of instances of people using these tools to poor effect, I also find there are plenty who use them to fantastic effect.

Blocking off areas? Unless it's a MAZE castle, of course. If not, then blocking areas and making things crazy complicated is a put off.

If I know I'm in a Maze castle, I'll try to solve the maze. If it's anything else, I'll look to see if there's an obvious way to get around or else I'll leave without rating - their loss.

As to the growing stuff - eek indeed. It's annoying, but I won't necessarily rate the house lower because of it.

      Re: Decorating trends

Making random props bigger is a common trend I hated seeing in tours. It reads like "I need to hook my visitor into exploring the rest of my house. Uhh, let me just castle magic these trees till they fill up the screen when they load in."

At worst it comes across as awfully uninspired. At best it becomes an oddity that is there just so the owner can say that it's there.

      Re: Decorating trends

I agree about the overuse of magic to grow something larger. I get claustrophobic when visiting a castle where that is the first thing I see, and will usually leave immediately.

      This!

The key word is “seamless” here; it takes some planning to keep the effect from being a distraction.

Anyone with a Botanic Garden knows how cavernous the interior is, and that’s without including the areas underneath and out back that contribute to the item count. I hit the housing limit even with potions, and ended up enlarging a couple of feature items in the two “wings” of the building. They are not near the entrance, or visible from there, so by the time someone rounds the corner to bring them into view, the growing action has stopped.

      Re: Decorating trends

I've always ensured that whatever I needed enlarged/shrunk looked good or at least added some variation in tree height (such as my Battlemage Keep and Avalon Castle Plot). Very few items near the entrance are enlarged, but I ensure they're not enlarged to the point that the entrance is practically covered in whatever the item(s) I'm using and that the items are far away to prevent them from crowding. I think that at most it takes a few seconds for the process to be completed in my houses that use castle magic. The only one that might take a few seconds longer is my Avalon Castle Plot, but that's because I want it to look like a forest home for the Zorphie pets (it's part of a theme that includes one other house and my dorm thus far).

I've visited too many houses that have crowded, enlarged items at the entrance (and some other random places depending on the house) that if it weren't for the the Spiral Scene, I really wouldn't be visiting houses except for when I feel like trying to fish for mounts.

I just saw a great Metropolitan Manor (didn't think to check who it belonged to) where they actually shrunk a couple of mannequins to place on a shelf on the wall, like dolls!

      Re: Decorating trends

I've been rating 10 houses everyday for a while now so someday I'll be able to get the Commons Apartment.

I think like everything else, these techniques can add or detract from a house depending how they are used.

I like it when a player has made a house appear unique.

Also, I have a question about Castle Tours.

In the Spring Update, I made a few changes to the way Rating House work. I removed New Today and made the Rate a Castle button that rates both new houses and older houses on the tour. This was to help prevent players from rigging the ratings of newly added houses and to prevent the leaderboards from being too static.

What do y'all think of these changes?

Have they made Castle Tours better?

      Arthur (Gary)
