With this method, you do not need to place an item down. If it doesn't stick, you just have to move it to the ground, then press the hotkey "H" on your keyboard, canceling the placement. This tricks the game into believing that there is a layer where the item was rotated, making you able to place the item. This is why it works with secondary selections as well. If the primary selection is in a rendered area, then it creates a secondary area where the secondary selection is. This allows you to place the item. I have tried clicking down a random item before, but it just doesn't seem to do anything for me.
