When you saw this title on the blogs home page, you were probably like, "Yay! Onion finally decided to get back to his Top 10 lists and not boring PvP updates!" Don't deny it, I know you did. ;) So I'm back, yes. It's been hard for me to find time to write up a list of this size, between my real life and arena tournaments. Fortunately, I've found some time today to pull together another top 10 list. Just so you know, this list does contain spoilers, so read at your own risk. Today's topic?
"Top 10 instance areas in Wizard101"
#10: Temple of Storms - Krokotopia, Tomb of Storms
I personally thought that this was a pretty cool instance. In order to pass the Gatekeeper, you didn't have to fight him, like every other random Krok in the game. You simply had to pass his test. First, your body and battle skills were tested by running a gauntlet of 3 bosses, ending with the Son of Storms. After emerging victorious, the Gatekeeper challenged you to a test of the mind. You were sent through another gauntlet, except this one was filled with puzzles. Believe it or not, some of these could be pretty tricky the first time. Upon passing both tests, you were allowed into the sanctum to battle Krokopatra for the fate of Krokotopia. Epic, no?
#9: Frostholm - Grizzleheim
My memory of this instance is a bit foggy, as it's been ages since I've done GH (I did it on my first wizard, and never went back). However, from what I remember, Frostholm was pretty cool. You went around the camp, pretending that you were a bad guy. Secretly, you went around playing an assassin, killing off the members of the dark side of the force. Finally, you revealed yourself, and you killed off the leader of the group, Ivar Andersson. Who knew such an innocent children's game would have such a dark instance? I sure didn't, but I think it was a good move by KI.
#8: Grand Chasm Past - Dragonspyre, the Atheneum
The Grand Chasm Past is on the list for one reason, and that reason is not its difficulty. The GCP is a fairly easy instance with an easy boss at the end. However, the setting of the instance is pretty awesome, if you ask me. While exploring the Grand Chasm in present age Dragonspyre (which is in ruins), you find a crystal and take it to a vault. You insert the crystal into some device, which takes you back into Dragonspyre's heyday. You are shoved right into the middle of the Dragon Titan's attack on Dragonspyre. You team up with Vasek Ashweaver in order to save the Chasm's vaults. You mend bridges, lock vaults, and battle a giant Helephant. Sure, it's not difficult, but the frantic atmosphere makes it one of the most fun instances in the game. Unfortnately, Vasek is killed in action, as you find his ghost in a vault during the present day.
#7: Sunken City - Wizard City
When tackled at level 15-16 like the game assumes you will, Sunken City is madness. High ranking mobs pulling you in at every corner, towers, and 1K bosses are thrown at you for the first time, all just to help some bratty kid with her report. Sunken City gets a spot on here for welcoming new players to Wizard101... with a punch to the gut...
#6: Shirataki Temple - Shoshun Village, Mooshu
While other instances on this list are here for their difficulty or atmosphere, I put Shirataki on the list because of its beauty. When you emerge from the forest, you see the breathtaking view of the lake, a lone island, and a tree in the middle. Also, this area features an ominous looking temple. Inside you find a beautiful water-filled room, in which you face off with the Plauge Oni.
#5: Big Ben - Royal Museum, Marleybone
Besides being somewhat challenging, Big Ben offers one of the most epic boss battles in Wizard101. After chasing Meowiarty and Malistaire all over Marleybone, you finally trap them inside the clock faces of Big Ben. Malistaire summons an Agony Wraith, takes the Krokonomicon, and leaves Meowiarty to kill you. So, inside the awesome looking Big Ben 15th floor, you face off with the trickiest cat to walk the spiral. Good luck, young wizard!
#4: Crimson Fields - Mooshu
Crimson Fields is one of the biggest, most interactive instances in the game. You start off by meeting the general, Rikugun Mikawa, at the fort. You have no time to waste, so you quickly gather up wood piles in order to make defenses. You find some scouts, kills some Trolls, help some rock people, kill a secret boss (I won't ruin it for you), fight a small war, and take out Warlord Katsumori, who happens to have a nasty habit of turning into a giant demon elephant.
#3: The Labyrinth - The Necropolis, Dragonspyre
I absolutely love this instance. It's boss battle after boss battle, and every single one of them carries good items. You come to the Labyrinth looking for the Dean of Admissions, Vladmir Darkflame. Unfortunately, he's a major criminal and is stuck in jail. Dmitri Ironchains, the prison guard, has you round up some criminals before letting you in to see the Dean. Once you find the Dean, he promises that he's good now, and he needs your help getting him his lost clothing items. You kill off some more bosses to get his things, and then he turns on you (oh puh-lease, you didn't see that coming?) in an attempt to jail-break. You humble the Dean by sending him into the afterlife. He apologizes for all that he's done, and gives you that beloved portal stone.
#2: Kensington Park - Digmoore Station, Marleybone
I'll be honest, I've never actually completed this instance. I never have time to sit down for 2-3 hours and play a children's card game, so that "Machine Master" badge still is missing from my spellbook. Kensington Park is the most feared instance in Wizard101. Every battle you're fighting regular enemies with 2,000+ health, while you fight the "War of the Weird." By the time you finish this instance, you'll be dreaming about clockworks, and how much you hate them.
So Kensington is one of the best known instances in the game... what could possibly have beat it?
#1: The Great Spyre - Dragonspyre
The Great Spyre, the game's final instance. In this instance, you'll have to fight your way through Gurtoks, Blackguards, Soul Servants, and a nifty defense system that involves simultaneously activating crystals. You'll have to rely on teamwork here, and once you get to the end, you'll see the man you've been hunting for 5 worlds: Malistaire. You kill his guards while he is in deep concentration. He is using the Krokonomicon to summon the Dragon Titan. By doing this, Malistaire believes that he will be able to revive his dead wife, Sylvia. Any ways, killing his guards breaks his focus. Cyrus steps in and tries to talk some sense into his brother, but Malistaire sends Cyrus away with a force field of sorts. He turns his attention to you, and the final battle begins under the watchful eye of the Dragon Titan himself...
Honorable Mentions: The Ironworks, Tree of Life
