It's time the parental system is updated

I saw this interaction on twitter today by a rather famous person in the wizard101 YouTube community, and it reminded me of a similar situation I ran into 2 years ago, albeit luckily for me, I was always the ”parent” of my own accounts, even when I started playing this game 10 years ago as a minor.



Unfortunately for people like james, this is not the case and the response from KI support is inexcusable.

Truly, what if his parents werent alive? What if there was no way for him to remember?

The decade old verification system needs to evolve with the current times, and asking for verification information such as parental info or old email accounts that no longer exist is no longer the proper way to handle verifications.

you are responsible for keeping your information up to date.

Ignorance of rules is not an excuse unless you can prove that you diligently did all that was possible for a person with normal common sense to know them (like reading the TOS and checking periodically your master account info).

There could be some kind of periodical reminder added to the game, yes. Like every year or so a little message IG saying "hello wizard, it has been a while since you last updated your information. Mind to check that everything is still good? We need it in case.. bla bla.."

But you still need to think about it.

Right!? Like if I decide to change my email address for whatever reason, KI shouldn't keep that old email address in their system, let alone for 10 years. Same thing if my credit card expires and I get a new one in the mail, KI shouldn't keep the information of expired cards either. If I want to change the parental information of an account, KI should only keep old information like that for 30 days max (in case someone hacks your account you want traceability).

Hopefully this thread can be a reminder for folks here on Central to go login on the main website and check their current contact information, etc -- especially on the Master account.

I have come across, them asking me for that type of info, that I had used to OPEN my account with. I had one documentation, luckily, but how many people actually keep receipts for 10 years? At this point, I no longer have my cards that I used to open my account with, so this is something I had always wonder myself. Recently, I am using only one credit card for all gaming and I have saved my bills for the most part, going back about 7 years now....give or take.

Most things seems to require or suggest that you hold onto things for 7 years. Billing inquiries and what not. We do have the statue of limitations on things. I know with businesses its 7 year and when you start talking about medical records its up to 10 years and plus, but this is an on line game!

I can understand why KI is so strict about it, but I also think that there should be so sort of compromise. Perhaps a yearly notice on making sure things are updated? We get those when our sub is about to run out, so why not a reminder to help keep the accounts updated.

100% agree. Upon 18, wizards should be allowed to control their own accounts. Parental controls should be disabled.

Just like how colleges and companies exclude parental control, so should KingsIsle once Wizards reach 18. However, KingsIsle cannot track our age as per ESRB regulations, so such an automatic system would sadly not be possible. I am unsure whether or not KingsIsle can still be ESRB compliant and allow us to update our age after we create our account though, perhaps @Sparck can answer that one for us?
