Re: The golden age of Wizard101?

When the first CEO, J. Todd Coleman, was still with us and before the Dragon's Hoard Pack. That was the golden age of Wizard101 IMHO. Once KingsIsle started shifting towards RNG Packs, mobile games, endless promotions and more aggressive marketing strategies after Coleman left, the "golden age" so to speak swiftly ended and I would argue that we are living through the worst of it now.

I also don't expect things to get any better- if I am being realistic, I don't see KingsIsle doing a 180. The slow and steady decline of KingsIsle is on its way, and though it will take some time, it has begun. Call me cynical, but at its current rate I don't see a change of heart on KingsIsle's horizon anytime soon.

I can only say 2013-2014 era because before that time period, I didn't play wiz. I wasn't around when most of Arcs 1-2 were released. But I know there was a large difference in the game once Arc 3 began with Polaris in 2015.

I have been playing since October of 2009 the level cap was 50, DS! Even though I have met A LOT of wonderful people over the years, some of the best memories was during those times before CL came out. I had a group of friends that we were like a family, all ages and we did a lot together. Quest, massive PVP parties, tons of joking around and endless laughter to the point all of us at some time had fallen out of our chairs from laughing so hard. For me that was The Golden Age of Wizards101

Re: The golden age of Wizard101?

I think it would be around 2014. Darkmoor was OP back then but it was really nice if you had because Drop Rates weren't fixed yet. People were finally feeling powerful fresh off of Waterworks gear and I think by then, it was quite sometime after Tartarus gear as well. The new sets of clothing and having "something to farm" put the game in motion. Good times, good times.

No you're totally right. Back then Kingsisle as a company aimed for greater player enjoyment and better gameplay. Of course it had it's hiccups in errors and unfairness here and there but overall, wizards didn't need Crown items to be good at the game. Now Kingsisle is the total opposite, leaning towards ways the company could take out all of the money from it's players by having almost everything cost crowns or membership, it's as though they're fueled to exclusively make more money. Now making more money is an extremely driving force of releasing new types of content (such as spellments) rather than player enjoyment/better gameplay. It's as though the fact that the company discovered that the player base would pay so much money for good gear from packs, that packs became the staple for the company than the gameplay and now the game is centered by crowns.

he update is trying to make the gameplay better but I wouldn't exactly say that their motivations to make more money has dialed down even slightly. It's not like the gameplay for the long run was bad ever since Dragon's Hoard Pack was bad at all other than a few problems, but it didn't become more fun to the same extent that the company was gaining more revenue from us.

If I ever see a greater focus on content, than the crownshop or sales on membership, then maybe I'll actually think that the company cares a lot for making greater/better gameplay. However, the company literally just released the UFO Mount, Alien Piggle, and Friendship packs within the span of less than a week ALL OF THEM ARE CROWNS ONLY, instead of making small new content like Key bosses or even new side quests.

Re: The golden age of Wizard101?

I also have to say after Dragonspyre, particularly around Grizzleheim, and before Celestia.

Oh boy the hype for Celestia was absolutely insane. GH had shown that plain puzzle piece worlds were a thing of the past, there were three new schools of magic to speculate about, critical/block were coming to shake things up, mounts had made traversal so much faster and easier, and there was a brand new story to explore. EDIT: And the Selena Gomez Crab Alley teaser event. How could I forget!?

The game was on a rocket ship as its growth really began to explode.

There were worrying signs not long after *cough* which oddly seemed to correlate with an increased emphasis on the new crown shop *cough* but Wizard101's rise would hold out -- peaking about five years later. I suppose some may say that makes 2014-15 Wizard101's day in the sun. But to me that was the last gasp of a dying era.

It all makes for an interesting case study that's for sure.

Re: The golden age of Wizard101?

It's hard for me to pin down a so-called "golden age" for W101, but often I felt like the transition from Arc 1 to Arc 2 was a pivotal moment in the game's lifetime. In comparison, I didn't hear much going on when Arc 3 came around. At that point, most of the people I knew who played the game had quit and moved on.

Despite this, I have fond memories of when the four dungeons (especially Darkmoor) dropped. As a level 100, it just seemed so satisfying to finally have a designated "endgame" area to farm gear from. It was a nice change of pace for a while... Until new worlds started coming out after and kept introducing better gear sets. From that point on, Darkmoor felt less and less rewarding for being its own set of dungeons.

Re: The golden age of Wizard101?

I didn't get to vote so I say Dragonspyre when the story was essential. Yes, Celestia through Khrysalis continued the story, but Polaris, Mirage, and Empyrea just watered down the story and most of the side content became more and more useless as time went on.
