      Events

      Dear KI,

I dont want to seem ungreatful with all the new stuff you have and had for us this summer, but it seems to be a lot. Every week you had some type of event and members benefits for your players, and at time time, I am personally feeling its too much. I have felt like there has been no down time for just questing.

I have had limited time to play this summer and every time I have logged on there is some type event going on that I am trying to take part in, but I am missing just the simple days of questing.

By far I am not saying to get rid of the events....no way! I have enjoyed them, but it would be nice if there was more down time between them all.

Example, we just got done with double pets and when this was on, I was working on pets and farming mostly when I logged on. Now I see you have the next decklathon and that means time to prep for that event.

This might sound silly, but honestly I am overwhelm with everything that is going on. That I am finding myself sighing when I log on I am not sure if anyone else is feeling this way or not. I am just sharing in how I feel. I really do like all the new stuff you have for us, but if there was more space between events, that would be really nice.

      Sincerely,

      Bailey Jade

      Re: Events

I agree. I dont even see why they limit the events to just 7 days...also both the deckathalon and the beastmoon were happening at the same time which is a good case of separating events out

      Re: Events

I guess events are the new activity provider for W101.

It seems to me (just my opinion) that KI is finding a way to entertain players beyond the quest-type game that is either over (when you reach max) or redundant. In this aspect, having something happen every week makes players interested in coming back, rather than stay away waiting for something to do.

I agree the pace is fast; now I'm on holiday, but when work starts again, there is no way that I will be able to compete for tops or do everything that is available.
But I believe this is not meant to be, and the aim is just to have a wider choice of things to do, and not to do them all. A little as in real life your town can organize several events, but you will not go to all of them, rather will chose one or two that are really of interest to you; or when you go to the amusement park, but will not try all of the available attractions, just chose the one(s) that fit your time, likes & wallet.
After all, these events are cyclical, so you can do next time what you couldn't do today.

So hum, just let it go, and enjoy whatever is fun for you, don't take it as an obligation.

      Re: Events

I think if they're going to limit events to only 7 days, then they should not also put a cap on daily progress.

Also, I think a lot of these "events" are turning into chores. For the beastmoon hunt, I was playing to progress in the event more than to have fun. Deckathalon is even worse. It's too grindy.

Remember, you don't HAVE to do them all. Personally, I don't think the new spiral showcase is worth my time nor is finishing the beastmoon event. Deckathalon for a pet that gives good cards and is collectible is decent, but still even more of a chore.

I agree and I sometimes feel overwhelmed with everything going on. Now I have to pick and choose what I feel like doing whenever I log in. Also in my opinion, there seems to be too much of a cash grab going on.

      Re: Events

Personally I don't like questing but I agree with the overall sentiment.

Yes, they're optional but should you want to participate, their limited-time nature compels you to drop everything else in-game to focus on the current available event. The need to "act now" drives players into activities they might not want to engage in right now out of fear of missing the opportunity... and that pressure isn't fun.

However I feel Bailey's suggestion of giving more space between events might make the situation worse, while also leaving players bored. If the events are rarer, then players will feel more forced into playing them once they show up - and the events' schedule is even more likely to conflict with what the player wants to do.

So I'd propose the opposite: give more time to each event, and run more events together.

For example, I feel there should always be one or two Deckthalons active, just changing schools every week. If there's always two deckathalons up, players can skip them without fear of missing out because they'll be back in just 3 weeks. And they'll know they can join in the deckathalon whenever they like, they choose when to play it.
Just like I choose when I want to pvp, or when I want to farm.

The key issue here is the "limited time" aspect. Events give us more activities, but the time limit takes away our control over what activities we can play. In other words, the player's interests are overruled by KI's schedule.

Fortunately, other games already solved the dilemma between "limited time" and playing freedom so there's plenty of models KI could look up for inspiration. The general concept is always the same though: ideally there should always be equivalent events up, allowing us to experience the activity albeit with different rewards or distinct challenges available at a time.
That's already possible for the deckathalon, spiral showcase and scroll of fortune... and the Beastmoon Hunt could be expanded similarly as well.

But the way the events currently dictate our options - what we can or can't play - is unhealthy and makes them feel like chores assigned by KI. "It's time to play the Deckathalon!", "now it's time to play the Beastmoon Hunt!", and being told how to play is just not enjoyable.

      Re: Events

Do you actually like doing all of the events? Skipping out of the things you don't want to do at that time is not a bad thing. They will come back over and over again until you are sick of them.

I did the Deckathalon once to get the fire pet and I am looking forward to more Beastmoon Hunt events, but am totally skipping the Spiral Showcase and the other thing other than what I naturally get doing what I do.

Take a breather and actually think about why you are doing what you are doing and maybe you will be able to toss some of the extra fluff aside that is freaking you out.

KI has given us a buffet and we can choose to take what we like or pig out.

The limited time is a good thing because it helps people moderate how long they can gorge on a certain item and helps it so people don't do it until they hate it and gives us things to look forward to again.

      Re: Events

It might seem overwhelming now, given all these events are new and releasing at the same time, but I suspect in six months or so these events will end up just like Lost Pages or Five Boxes (less participation over time, wizards moving on to questing/new dungeons/etc).

Seeing as how several wizards are already half way through the Scroll of Fortune, missing several events (or taking a break) will still allow for maximum rewards in the SoF, so there really isn't even a commitment needed either.

      Re: Events

Yep - I posted a similar thread not too long ago, and got a lot of the same advice. It's on us to avoid feeling overwhelmed and not like we have to do everything all of the time it's available. I ended up not really doing much in Test Realm because I chose to play the Live game. On previous test realms, I felt like I had plenty of time to check things out and report bugs, but the most recent one felt like there was way too much going on to see and get a feel for most of it, and they were adding new stuff to it as well.

Bottom Line: If it's not fun, we're not going to make time to do it, we'll just log off.
