Desperate Times - A Guide to Shadowbones, Bort Shadowmane, and the Shadowwock

Welcome to the Sands of Time! Before you face Grandfather Spider himself, you’ll have to fight your way through three formidable foes: Shadowbones, Bort Shadowmane, and the Shadowwock. Each boss is located in a different sigil area, but this guide will cover all three. The Grandfather Spider fight will be covered separately.

      Shadowbones (East Sands of Time)

Shadowbones is a lone shadow/death boss with 32,000 health.

      The Basics:
      • Boosts 10% to Fire, Life
      • Resists 40% to Ice, Death
      • Stun Immune

      Shadowbones Cheats
      • If you cast any type of feint, Shadowbones will interrupt to shout “Why Don’t We Trade!” and swap the two traps. The 70% trap will be put on you and the 30% trap will go on Shadowbones.

      • If you use any type of heal, Shadowbones will interrupt to say “Let’s Dampen the Heals!” and cast a -75% Doom and Gloom.
        • This can be replaced by another bubble.

      • If ANYONE in the battle (that means your team OR Shadowbones!) uses some type of fairy (Pixie, Dark Fairy, Sprite, etc..), Shadowbones will shout “Fairy!” and cast a 20% Amplify on himself.

      • The trigger for this is still unknown, but occasionally, Shadowbones will shout “Shadow-Shadow! I love Shadow!” and give himself one shadow pip.

      Shadowbones Strategy
      • Use Melt and Indemnity if you want to feint. Since Shadowbones swaps feints with an ice spell, you can throw on a melt beforehand to dispel it. A protected feint with Indemnity will also work.
      • If you’re worried about the Doom and Gloom, unequip healing pets. Although you can replace the Doom and Gloom with something else, one untimely pet heal and your big heals like rebirth or dryad may be ruined by it.

Other than that, you can treat Shadowbones like a normal boss!

Bort Shadowmane (West Sands of Time)

Bort Shadowmane is a lone shadow/myth boss with 45,000 health.

      The Basics:
      • Boosts 32% to Storm
      • Resists 40% to Myth
      • Stun Immune

      Bort Shadowmane Cheats
      • If you hit Bort Shadowmane without killing him, he will interrupt to shout Check Out My Armor!” and cast a protected Myth Absorb on himself.

      Bort Shadowmane Strategy
      • Make sure to kill him in one shot. This fight is pretty straightforward. As long as you kill Bort in one blow, you won’t have to worry about any absorbs. However, even if you do happen to fall a bit short, the absorb is standard and shouldn’t be a problem for you.

      Shadowwock (South Sands of Time)

Shadowwock is a lone shadow/fire boss with 51,212 health.

      The Basics:
      • Boosts 10% to Ice
      • Resists 40% to Fire
      • Stun Immune

      Shadowwock Cheats
      • The Cycle. Shadowwock runs on a cycle nearly identical to the original Jabberwock in Avalon. Every 3 rounds, a big shadow meteor strike will be cast + a 200% trap. Every 2 rounds, the Shadowwock will interrupt to remove all traps that are on him.
        • Round One: Normal Round.
        • Round Two: If there are any traps on the Shadowwock, he will interrupt to shout “Snicker-Snack!” and remove all of them at the beginning of this round.
        • Round Three: At the beginning of this round, Shadowwock will interrupt to shout “You Make Me Frumious!” and cast a HUGE shadow meteor strike. This spell does roughly 2500-3000 damage. Immediately following that, the Shadowwock will place a +200% universal trap on himself.
        • Round Four: The Shadowwock will once again shout “Snicker-Snack!” and remove any traps on him (including the +200% trap!)
        • Round Five: Normal Round.
        • Round Six: The Shadowwock will shout “You Make Me Frumious!” and cast his big shadow meteor strike in addition to placing his +200% trap, but he will ALSO shout “Snicker-Snack!” and remove all traps that are on him directly after.
        • Round Seven: Cycle repeats from round one.

      • If you cast any type of feint, the Shadowwock will interrupt to shout “How Mimsy!” and swap the two traps. The 70% trap will be put on you and the 30% trap will go on Shadowwock.

      • If ANYONE in the battle (that means your team OR Shadowwock!) fizzles, the Shadowwock will give himself 2 power pips.

      Shadowwock Strategy
      • Deal with the shadow meteor strike. That hit is huge, so you want to tone it down to ensure everyone’s survival. To do this, there are two options that I would recommend:
        • Bad Juju: You may not be able to dispel the shadow meteor, but you can lessen its blow with Bad Juju. You would have to play it on Round 2 in order for it to effect the cheat hit. You will only need 1 person to play Bad Juju if you’re playing from second, but you’ll need 2 people to cast Bad Juju on round 2 if you’re playing from first. Otherwise, your juju might be used up by Shadowwock during his regular turn.
        • Legion Shield: This method won’t be as safe as Bad Juju, but Legion Shield is a more widely available spell and will still get the job done. Just like Bad Juju, you would only need 1 Legion Shield if playing from second, but 2 if you’re playing from first. After all, you don’t want all the shields to be used up by a regular AOE.

      • Use an Indemnity Feint, but not on round 1. Since Indemnity is a protection spell, Shadowwock will be unable to swap the two traps. You want to avoid playing it on round one because the Shadowwock will cleanse all traps at the beginning of round two.
      • You ideally want to hit on round 3. You only have a one round window to make use of that +200% trap (and it’s the same round as the meteor!). If you do this and have been blading your hammer the previous 2 rounds, you should have plenty of firepower to take Shadowwock out.

      What the battle looks like:
      • Round One: Blade, Blade, Blade, Blade
      • Round Two: Bad Juju/Legion Shield, Blade (Or Bad Juju/Legion Shield if you’re first), Blade, Blade
      • Round Three: Indemnity Feint, Blade, Blade, Hit

With those 3 goons out of the way, time for the grande finale!

Re: Desperate Times - A Guide to Shadowbones, Bort Shadowmane, and the Shadowwock

My friend and I actually figured out how to do it ourselves with just 2 people (He is balance and I am storm).

Turn 1, I use a sharpened stormblade on myself. He uses a sharpened elemental blade on me.
Turn 2, I Use an Indemnity Feint, and he uses a Potent Hex
Turn 3 (I survived the Meteor at 175 Health, so for this to work, you must have gotten a shadow pip and have him not attack you, but your partner.) He, being the first, used a Sharpened balance blade on me, and I hit with an Epic Rusalka (I had 8 normal pips). This dealt ~60,000 damage.

This was done with 2 wizards, but probably only works with specific circumstances. However, you could probably replicate this with either TC or a decent enough hit, seeing as he only had 52,212 HP, meaning you have room for a small damage gap.
      "Are you crazy!?"

Nice work! You're right, I think that strategy has a lot of variables (and luck) involved. A little too risky for my tastes, but hey, if it works ... it works! Congrats on getting it done with 2!

Another helpful guide from Vanessa! Question, do any of these bosses have natural piercing? Also, any spells we should look out for? I.E. stuns, (Mirage enemies love to chain stun) charm/ward removals.
Meh, have been on and off Wizard101. If you have a question, you can PM me.

I remember the bosses having pierce, but I didn't test how much.

I didn't notice anything too significant to look out for at Shadowbones and Bort Shadowbane. Maybe one or two stuns, but they didn't occur that often.

At the Shadowwock however, be prepared to get A LOT of accuracy debuffs placed on you. Every time we fizzle (or he does), the Shadowwock will give himself 2 power pips ... so he tries to make that happen as often as possible!

      Hi Vanessa,

Just an fyi that this guide worked like a charm on my 5 previous wizards and others I helped-until tonight.

I was quad boxing, and Shadowwock used Choke to stun us all first round. I got through it without too much further ado though.

Happy to hear the guide has helped you! While I personally haven't been stunned too many times at Shadowwock, it can definitely be annoying when it does happen. Even with a stun, I still think a third round kill would be possible with the 200% trap (and if not, a round shortly after). If it came to it, even fleeing and restarting is always an option.

I'm happy you were able to muscle through it. Congrats!

So what I'm hearing that as a max level life wizard, there is no way on earth I'll solo shadowwock? Totally can solo Shadowbones and Bort nicely it seems!

Could Virulent Plague also be an option? Bad Juju TCs are hard to come by for non-death wizards, but Virulent Plague TCs are easily available.

It's not impossible to solo Shadowwock, but it definitely would be on the tougher side. The one time I did try to solo the fight I failed miserably, but that was before I figured out all the cheats. With a little more planning, it probably could be done. If you know for sure you can kill on round 3, you wouldn't need to juju/shield because he'd be dead anyway (so that's an extra buffing round).

Yep! Anything that will significantly decrease the meteor's damage will work.
