      Re: "Thought For the Day"

"Then and Now --- " And I would add "Thank You Notes" to this. At one time, it was common etiquette to say 'Thank you' in appreciation for a thoughtful act, expression, or gift.

Then -- "awww --- that was so thoughtful of them to acknowledge --- "

Now -- "gee, I wonder --- (did they receive the gift, did they enjoy the dinner?)"

      Pooh and Piglet ---
"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh. There was a pause.
"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."
"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.
"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.
"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.
"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."
And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs ... he thought that his best friend had never been more right.
      - A.A. Milne, author Winnie-the-Pooh
Sending thoughts to those having a Difficult Day today and hope you have your own Piglet to sit beside you.

      Re: "Thought For the Day"

      Riddle for today:
"What is seen near the end of January and February that can't be seen at the beginning of either month?"
Answer: Among all the twelve months in a year, the two foremost months -- January and February -- have a common ending. Towards the end of January and February is seen the ending --'uary' which is not seen in the beginning.

      Re: "Thought For the Day"

It took me a little while to figure this out. But I thought I would share what happened here today.

"This is our first winter/spring with the new sliding doors in the kitchen. I was at first 'surprised' when this happened today. But evidently, it is quite common, and can be serious (for the birds especially).

While I was getting a cup of coffee this morning, I head a "thud" behind me. I didn't realize what happened at first. But then one of our dogs, Chico, kept whining at the glass door. That is when I saw the black feathers mixed with some white fluid stuck to the window. Evidently, a bird crashed into the glass sliding door. I looked around and could not find any injured bird nearby. I hope it is safe somewhere.

I found an article after googling "how do I stop birds from flying into a glass door". Looks like we have some work to do."

This is what a bird sees, and why it is so dangerous for them.

I also had to deal with this issue first hand. MANY years ago, I managed a hotel in Waikiki, Hawaii. When I started, the maintenance team was in the process of re-tinting the hotel windows. My first thought was the tint was to make the customers more comfortable, but one of the installers told me they were updating it for 2 reasons.

Yes, one reason was for the guests, but the old tinting already did that. The other reason was that birds can not identify glass. Apparently, between their form of vision and the reflections in the glass, they would frequently fly into the windows. Sometimes they injured themselves and in some cases, even broke the windows. Apparently, the hotel had over a dozen broken windows and an even larger number of injured or killed birds (In this case, sine we were right on the beach, Seagulls). The tint they applied was not as glossy as the previous one, and sure enough, bird vs window issues dropped to being a rare issue.
