A Gateway to Central PvP Competitions

      Hello pvp dueling fans!

I'm sure many of you come to Central to discuss pvp strategies or get help with pets, find rare treasure cards that can help you in ranked pvp and what not. What you may not realize is that there is a whole world of Central pvp competitions from level specific type tournaments, to fun rules types of tournaments. There are pvp ladders as well that stretch across a 3 month time span...a come as you will and do challenges on your own time type of deal. All tournaments also give some sort of prizes for the top place winners! Some tournaments will give forum gold which if you trade or purchase treasure cards here on Central, you know forum gold is a must have. There are other tournaments that give other rewards that can be used in game such as crowns or other awesomely amazing prizes!
If that isn't cool, idk what is!

Now then, to make things easier for players that would like to try out Central competitions, it's necessary that they are knowledgeable on how to navigate that pvp section, as well as what all types of competitions we host, expectations, rules and so forth. That is where this thread comes into play. Within the contents of this thread, I will attempt to breakdown everything you need to know about Central competitions and answer any questions that you have.

      Let's get started, shall we?

      Types of Competitions

There are several types of different competitions hosted by Central. Some of the most popular special rules ones are:

      • King/Queen of the Arena - best male and female duelists crowned
      • Head of Class - decides who is the best in each magical school
      • No Rules - rules? anything goes here
      • Spell Nullification - control what spells your opponent can or can not use
      • Uncritical - no critical stats, pet talents or spells allowed
      • Newcomer - a tournament made for those that do not wish to face more experienced players
      • Wits End - special rules that may or may not drive you to your wits end
      • Unmastery - competition without mastery amulets
      • Olde Tyme - brings back the feel of pvp from the DS days

There are also tournaments held for each level group, Adept - Exalted (on rare occasions Journeyman), that allow players to see who is the best in their level class.

All of these competitions have some sort of special rules. The rules cover anything from what gear is allowed to what spells are allowed. They also vary by level group. All the more important tournament rules can be found listed in detail on each tournament page. There are also rules of general behavioral expectations as well as procedural type rules located on this
LINK. It is important for all players to read through the rules listed on that link and ask any questions that may come up. Any one of our friendly tournament masters would be more than glad to answer any questions you may have.

      PvP Ladders

Central hosts pvp ladders that run for 3 months where players can join and climb their way to the top in order to gain a great reward at the end of the season. The past few seasons we have offered crowns for the top 3 places: 10k crowns for 1st, 5k crowns for 2nd and 2k crowns for 3rd.

Each ladder is broken up into different levels to keep competition fair and balanced. There are also special rules that players can opt to use for their matches to keep game play fun. The timeline for ladder competitions isn't as strict as it is for normal tournaments. However, every 21 days old challenges or nonactive players are removed in order to keep things clean and tidy on the ladder, but as long as everyone is active and dueling there's no worries.

Announcements and ladder chat can be found on
THIS thread. You can ask for matches here, or make suggestions on what you would like to see in ladder competitions.

If you're interested in joining ladders, you can find them by clicking the Wizard101 PvP tab at the very top of your page. Then you would look to the left hand side of the next page and go down to where it says ladders. Click on ladders. Here you will find either derby or pvp links. For the time being, Central only hosts 1v1 ladders. So if that is what you're looking for, you will click on "pvp singles events". That will take you to a page with all currently running ladders. Just click on whichever one(s) you want to join and join up. It's really that easy!

      General Rules Explanation

      Referenced above were the
General Tournament Rules (linked here as well for your convenience) for Central competitions. These rules may seem intimidating, but once we get done here, they won't be so scary. Let's start by discussing the Universal Rules. These rules are set in place to make sure players understand that cheating or acting in a disorderly way are not acceptable in Central competitions and by doing so there will be consequences for such actions. The more pressing and important rules are located below the Universal Rules in the PvP Rules section (below the Derby rules). These rules cover more specific restrictions and give more detail to procedures.

      Section 1 - Bans

Spells in this section have been found to be over powered or allow matches to be too sided putting greater advantage to the person that has first turn. Some of these spells/pet talents are still allowed in some tournaments. Those that do allow them will have it specifically stated on the tournament page whether or not it is allowed. If it is not listed as allowed, it is safe to assume it is not and should not be used in battle.

      Section 2 - Restrictions

The restrictions put in place here are due to how these spells can become overwhelming and shut opponents out to the point where once again matches can become unfair. We have found over time that these restrictions allow for more fair game play while still allowing use of these spells. Players have enjoyed that they still are allowed flexibility when setting their decks. This section covers such things as dispels, Mana Burn, Elucidates and other spells.

      Section 3 - Tournament Matches

This section discusses procedures for matches all the way from waiting for opponents to show up to where matches will take place, procedures for semis and finals and discusses "turtle decks", etc. Lots of information is located in this section, but let's simplify everything for you.

      • After you and your opponent agree to a day/time to meet and duel, players have 15 minutes from the designated time to show up and be prepared to begin your match. Anyone that is late will have to go second to their opponent during the match.
      • All matches will take place in the practice arena except for rematches or round 2 of the finals.
      • Turtling (playing without attempt to defeat your opponent) is illegal.
      • With the exception of bubbles, spells your wizard has not yet been able to train are not allowed unless rules specify otherwise.
      • Treasure cards, gear spells or pet spell legality are determined by a damage chart (located at the bottom of the rules page). You would take the greatest damage possible on that card and compare it to the chart/school the spell is for to see if it is legal or not. The only exception to this would be Aftershock (4 pip quake). It's only legal at Master level and above.
      • Gear changes must be done before your match is created.
      • Players have 30 minutes after their match is finished to report the outcome.
      • If you forfeit or not show up to your match w/o giving your opponent notice or don't even respond while trying to schedule your duel, you will earn a strike. If you get 2 strikes, you will not be able to compete in the next batch of tournaments released.
      • You have to use the same wizard for an entire tournament with the exception of the Multi-Wizard 1v1 tournament.
      • Finals will be determined by the best of 3 matches.

      Section 4 - Rematches

Rematches will not be approved when rules are broken. However, if a player disconnects during their match, they will be given 1 rematch. Whoever caused the rematch to happen will have to go second in the rematch. You're only allowed 1 rematch per duel, and all gear including pets must stay the same as they were in the first match. Fairly easy to remember, right?

      Section 5 - Team Rules

I have to admit that team tournaments have not been doing very well for the longest time. Hopefully the future will change this. The team tournament rules coincide with the rules listed above and are just additions to those rules. All rules listed are self-explanatory and worth checking out if you're a team player.

      Section 6 - Ladder Rules

Like team rules, the ladder rules combine with all the other general rules and are simply additions to those rules. These 7 rules cover everything from time allowed for inactivity to giving free wins and so forth. They're very simple and self explanatory as well. If you're interested in ladders, it is well worth your time to give these rules a good read.

      Section 7 - Match Issues/Proof

Sometimes things happen in matches that may break rules or some other bad happenings. It is very important that when these things happen, players screen shot text chat screens or any other proof they have of what had happened or what was said and submit this to a tournament master or in a ticket as soon as possible. If you're unsure how to screen shot something, it's super easy. Simply put on your screen what you're wanting to SS and press the Prt Sc button, generally located in the top row keys on most keyboards. A picture of what you just SS will be sent to your Wizard101 folder that is created usually in your documents when you download the game. Then you would just upload the picture to a private folder on your profile here and attach it to your message to the tournament master. If you have difficulties with this, just message a TM for assistance.

Section 8 - Damage Chart/Crafted (or Loremaster dropped) Spells

You'll notice at the very bottom of the rules page a chart that lists the schools of magic and levels along with lots of numbers. You may be puzzled by this. Don't be. It's really rather simple to read this chart. Take a treasure card, any treasure card and look at the damages listed on that card. Take the highest possible damage given on the card and look at the chart. Find the level you're competing in and your school. Now find the meeting point (a number on the chart) where the level and school meet. If the highest damage on that card is higher than that amount, then the spell is not allowed for that level or below. This applies to the crafted or Loremaster dropped spells, too. The only difference is that you will take the highest non-enchanted damage and compare it to the chart. Do not try to do this after you've added monstrous or other damage enchants to it. Also, if you have a double hit spell like Minotaur or a DoT spell such as Heck Hound, refer to the information below the damage chart. It explains how to calculate the overall damage for those spells. For your convenience, the Lore spells have already been listed below the damage chart along with the levels they're accepted at.

Whew! Lots of information there, so be sure if anything is unclear ask questions!

      Discipline?

Now let's talk about what happens when you break rules. Of course we all know in life that if you break a rule then some sort of punishment occurs. Fortunately, we can't ground people to their rooms and take away dessert for a week. However, we can forbid habitual rule breakers from joining competitions. Also if someones actions are just really horrible they may face a permanent ban from Central competitions or from the site.
Now then, usually when someone gets a first offense such as a no show, no response, broke a pvp rule or forfeits a match, they receive a warning explaining what they did wrong. If that player gets a second offense, then they will have to sit out of the next batch of tournaments released..this is generally just one week. However, if behavior is really bad, consequences could be much more harsh. For example, if a player is really rude after a match that they lost, that breaks the sportsmanship rule and they will receive a warning for their behavior. If they go completely berserk and make threads here on the site using foul language or naming community members in a negative way that person could then face a suspension or perhaps a ban. The more severe the behavior or frequent, the more severe the consequence. Fortunately though, most infractions that occur are minor like a "no show" or a forfeit.

We should discuss what happens if you break a rule during a match such as for example you use a minion when that particular tournament forbids it. If you break a rule like this, you will lose the match. The player that does this will receive a warning for what they did and a strike against them, and as mentioned above if it happens again they will have to sit out for a release period. If this individual continually breaks rules and never seems to learn their lesson, they could face suspension or a ban.

See? It pays to read the rules and understand them. It also pays to ask questions. Don't feel as if you're annoying anyone or putting anyone out by asking questions. This is why the tournament staff is here....to help and assist players!

      Prizes!?!?!!!

We briefly touched on the topic of prizes for the winners of Central pvp competitions. Let's get a little more into detail about what all the prizes are. Through the span of a year, Central will host tournaments where the payout for winners is B-I-G!! The biggest of the events would be the tournaments that take place when Central has it's birthday. This month in particular, not only pvp tournaments have prizes but derby will as well. The mods will also hold different contests like decorating or hide n seeks....needless to say the birthday month is cram packed full of prizes and activities. But what's there to do when it's not birthday time? Where do you go to find crowns prizes or perhaps bundle codes? Well pvp tournaments of course!

Prizes commonly offered for special events are crowns, and who doesn't love crowns, right? Amounts range from anywhere from up to 60k crowns to more commonly 10k, 5k and 2k. All different amounts in between those amounts have been offered as well. A wizard could have a very nice shopping day in the crowns shop with all that loot! Other prizes are more "seasonal" such as mounts, pets, elixir packs, amber packs, etc. Sometimes there will be bundles as well. The most common tournament prize offered is forum gold. What can you do with that you ask? Well, you can visit the Central shop and buy music players and graphics to spruce up your profiles, name changes or name enhancements and other things to make your Central experience even more awesome. You can also, if you're into treasure card trading, find and purchase treasure cards with that forum gold...ones you've been wanting to get your hands on for the longest or perhaps stock up on Elucidates or Lifebanes?

The BIGGEST prize for winning a tournament would have to be the tournament win you will get along with the bragging rights that you conquered all opponents of your class or level to obtain that win. Imagine being the very best Fire wizard in the spiral! Or perhaps the best Magus level wizard in game!?! Can you imagine how exciting that would be? But wait! You not only get that tournament win and whatever other prize will come with it, but your name will be put in the tournament spotlight with a thread telling the community about your accomplishment and your name will be added to the winner's index where it will forever remain so your win will never be forgotten. Now that's pretty amazing!

Re: A Gateway to Central PvP competitions

Ive actually been doing the opposite, been doing a lot of 2v2 rank, I find it fun minus the occasional puppets but I mean have met a lot of nice people overall, but have decided to come back and see if centrals changed at all. one great thing about ranked is u don't have to spend a ton of crowns just to have the same gear options as people can have here on central who have a lot of money to spend on crowns so both have pros and cons.

Wizard101 centrals largest tournament champion of 256 players.
I will always be the king.

Blake ran the wit's 1v1, so he will distribute prizes for it. I have no clue what we're doing for the birthday tournaments yet or what prizes will be offered. None of that will be known till mid-July or so.

And yes, Luis, you're still King Noobie!
