Re: Why Death as Secondary School?
It's nice to start out as the "Master of Life And Death." You have death in your back pocket, should you need it. Early on, life and death work really well together. Death spells like Ghoul and Vampire are very powerful for thier time.
Life does not have an attack all spell (Forest Lord) until pretty late in the game, compared to every one else. Feint with a Centaur can do some really decent damage, and can carry you a long way. After that, feint gets used on the boss, as you will Forest Lord almost all the time until the minions are gone. Then switch to a single attack.
So, feint is the main reason. Double that, when you add potent trap later on.
I used the crafted life/death gear until I was able to get my critical up to levels (65+) where I could use a fairy or satyr to do most of my heals. Deer Knight is not bad to use with a death amulet, if you want to use up some of your spirit blades. Especially if you have a regular and sharpened version hanging around. Or, maybe a gargantuan boosted drain attack to top off your health so you don't need to find red wisps.

Re: Why Death as Secondary School?
Sorry but in my opinion the only useful trainable Death spell for any school is Feint. The one Death spell that Life could really use, Poison, is not trainable. That's why many Life have a Death wand, to pop Death Shields thrown up by Life Monsters.
Sooner or later you will realize that you can do so much more damage with Power Pips and gear that has your school's hit and critical, and that applies to any school, not just Life.
You can solve some of the problems of not having damage over time by having a deck loaded up with hit boosted small or medium hits likeLeprauchan or Seraph. I used Gargantuan Leprechauns against Belloq.
