      About "Hackers"

Seriously, why do people still believe it's possible to hack?

Listen, Wizard101 is a client-server networked game. The client sends packets to the servers (AKA, realms), and in turn receives information about how to correspond. There is NO way to influence the data stored on the server side, like health, mana, perks, etc. Likewise, there is no way to gain crowns or gold or anything like that, except client sided. What that means, is, for example: you change something in the src that adds something like:
      player.setHealth(1000000);
While it may appear to have changed on your screen, the data that your player reacts with, as well as the server itself, and other players, is what it used to be, and what was stored in the SQL Databases. In addition, there is no way to access the SQL Databases without knowing:
      a. The Password and Username to it (normally randomly generated sequences, that'd take millennia to brute force)
      b. Having verified IP/MAC addresses
      c. Having SSH access via Verified RSA public-private key pairs
      d. Possibly even more security measures.

So: Stop calling them hackers, the most likely reason for experiencing an apparent "hack" is a delayed return packet. Packets in most games are sent via TCP, meaning it is guaranteed to eventually be received on the other end of the socket, regardless of delay (unless the delay is so lengthy it causes a time out). So, what you may have seen on your screen could have been something that happened 20 seconds ago, but is just appearing and updating CLIENT/GRAPHICALLY SIDED (it's already updated on the server, almost immediately).

I LOL at every thread that accuses someone of a hacker. Heck, someone called me a hacker because I didn't fizzle with a black mantle on! Shows what people think of what's a hack.

well, of course there are kids in this game, they can be scared easily
btw every time you log in, you create an authorized connection with that database, even if your user may not have high privileges. once you're "in", you only have to gain certain permission and you can potentially make whatever you want in the spiral. i'm not saying that this is possible, it's just.. you can't be sure it isn't. this game was hacked before (e.g.: there was an hacker who cloned tons of dampen magic treasure cards), any kind of glitch was exploited and you can't be sure the system is flawless.

And even if you did somehow manage to "hack" the game, KI would eventually find out about it and ban you.

      Re: About "Hackers"

It IS possible to hack the game, though it is very unlikely.

I can guarantee that probably 99.99% of the time someone thinks they are hacked, they actually gave out their personal information, but there is still that .01% chance that it WAS a hack.

      ...
It greatly depends on the network architecture that KI uses. If there are any "peer-2-peer" components then you have one computer talking directly to another, which potentially exposes the IP/MAC to each other. It's not clear that KI always uses the realm server as a proxy for every whisper, chat, or status display shown by every wizard in a given duel.

It's not clear that the client is a purely a presentation layer, with no independent status update abilities of its own. Lagging and "rubber banding" show that the client has an independent wizard state, separate from the server's opinion about the wizard's state.

Game development has come a long way since the original online starcraft, doom, and diablo games. Hacking is certainly harder than it was, but I wouldn't say it's completely impossible. KI has lots of tools to monitor this, so I'm sure they have a very active hunt under way for hack attempts.

Only the kids say they saw a hacker. Mature players know its impossible to hack Wizard101.

      Re: About "Hackers"

While technically it IS possible to hack into just about anything thats connected to the internet, there's a certain amount of effort involved. I doubt that of the people who ARE capable of hacking into wizard101, almost none of them would really find it worth their time to do so.
