What is the point of having non-open chat?

I do like the option of menu chat and open chat.

But, I don't see the point of having non-open chat. With non-open chat, people can still swear and say offensive things by going around the filter. Not to mention, it teaches people wrong spelling. I find it annoying when people go around the filter and say bad things. Primarily because English is not my first language, and if I don't know any better, I would be thinking that the spellings are correct and will spell the same way irl. I also read in some website, that wizard101 is a game where people don't know how to spell. And I somewhat agree because of the above reason.

If you can still go around the filter, then just say it in open chat. People understand it either way anyway.




Another thing is, how do I make an account menu chat? I used to be able to switch to menu chat when I'm letting someone play, but now, there is no more option for it in my account. I can only have either open or non-open chat.

Actually for the most part, non open forces you to use correct spelling for most normal words. They get around the filter by combining words to mean something else. When it comes to swearing, you would have to do that anyway ( as even open doesn't allow swearing). For people that have English as a second language, it does help you learn to spell in a normal conversation. If you want to go back to menu chat, there should be a switch on your account on the main website. Should allow you to choose (menu or text chat and open if you have a card on file and are listed as above 18).

I agree with you on most levels. I'm pretty sure non-open chat has the purpose of not being able to read what open chatters say. There are still children that play this game and I think that's a good enough reason to keep it.

it does do this, BUT it also forces player to misspell other words that are blocked by the filter like grape for example. it only helps in some matters.

i believe the parental /master account has to do it. with adding the master password. once that is done you can turn off all text chat. at least for players over 18.

In game, avoiding the chat filter is a sanctionable offense. So even when players mis-spell words to allow them to swear, they can still be reported and muted.

Text chat (not open chat) allows users to converse in a more normal fashion, while filtering out inappropriate content in an attempt to protect those offended by such content (including but not limited to underaged individuals).

Sure players can circumvent the filter by breaking the terms of use.
Those that choose to do so take a chance at being muted or banned for their actions. The fact that end users/players choose to break the rules does not make the effort by KingsIsle useless, it just shows the lack of consideration towards others by those ignorant players.

The filter actually promotes correct spelling, mispelling to circumvent the filter is as mentioned earlier against the rules, not to mention that in most cases those that "see" these steps to circumvent the filter have to have some knowledge of its meaning in the first place.

Soak (example given by OP) usually means to drench someone in liquid (ie water), any other application requires a player to "stretch" the meaning. If they are able to do this, they arent being taught a reference to something bad, they already knew it.

Text/Filtered chat definately serves a purpose.

Non-open chat is quite meaningless now, the filters on it are more then a little oppressive since players have to CONSTANTLY work around it just to explain stuff IE: ToTH/WW cheats, grapes of wrath, three points, pitch black lake, your/enemies stats, and plenty more stuff out there

Actually that's text chat, for open all you need to do is put a space in. But you mentioned cell phone texts, if you can understand texts you can understand here. The point of text is to not to be able to read inappropriate words. There are a few casualties because of this (grapes is one). But for the most part it's in place to help in game without everyone swearing which in general it does. There will always be ones who go around filters ( even in open chat).

I'm in the master account. So, in parental Controls. It says something like this.

Listed below are the current parental controls.
Chat - Filtered Text You cannot change this value ON(check mark but disabled)
Chat - Open Text ON(check marK) this one I can turn off if i want
Chat - tfc You can not change this value ON(check but disabled)


So, why can I not turn off chat-filtered text and tfc???
