Hello everybody, flash33 here, and welcome to my very first wizard101 central guide. This particular guide will help people get a better understanding of the different types of chat.
Menu Chat
Menu chat is your basic type of chat found in pretty much every mmo. Menu chat, also known as quick chat or bubble chat, has a list of pre-approved words that will let you talk without having to type in the words you want to say.
Players with menu chat will have a crossed out chat bubble by their badge.
Text Chat
Text chat is the next stage of chat also found in most mmo's. Text chat, also known as filtered chat, allows you to type in words to talk with people who also have text chat. To use text chat, you must be 13 or older.
Words that are valid will show up white, and words that are not allowed by the wizard101 dictionary will show up red. Menu chat players can't see words typed in text chat, and will only see "..." (same for words that aren't allowed). Also, players with text chat can't use capital letters (this is due to players swearing around the filters and revealing personal info like addresses, phone numbers, etc.), however players with open chat can still see capital letters typed in text chat. A player who has text chat will have a white chat bubble by their badge.
Open Chat
Open chat, aka 18+ chat and free chat, is the next stage of chat that allows more freedom to talk with others.
In order to use open chat, you must be 18 or older and/or have it activated through a valid credit card. Only subscribers and Crowns players can use open chat (subscriptions and crowns bought with gift cards can't be used to unlock open chat). Open chat is different from text chat as now it has 3 different colors. Words in yellow indicate that only players with open chat can see it (examples of open chat only character's are numbers like 1,2,3,4, etc.) White means that both open and text chat players can see it. Red means that it's not allowed. Like with text chat, players who can't see phrases in their level of chat will see "...". Also, Open chat can use capital letters, and can see captial letters said by both open chat and text chat players.
Players with open chat won't have anything by their badge.
True Friend Chat
True friend chat is similar to text chat, except that it's enabled through the true friend code. To get one, first log into the game, then click on the button below.
Once you do that, click on the button labeled "Get true friend code".
This will give you a special code that you can give to a friend for them to type in when they log into the game like this.
Note that each friend code is only valid for 2 days (48 hours), and if you/they don't type in the code within that time period, you'll have to get another tfc (true friend code). Once your friend has typed in the code, they will get a notice that they are now true friends with you.

True friends names will show up green on your friends list to differentiate them from non-true friends.

Group Chat
Group chat is a type of chat that's only available in groups. Group chat allows you to talk to members in your group, but the main difference is only they can see it, and anyone else not in your group will see nothing, making it ideal for coming up with strategies for pvp or pve, talking to people who are in different areas and/or worlds or if you want to talk to a group of people without having others seeing what you say. When your using group chat, the text will show up as blue as shown below. and no chat bubbles will be displayed (nor will the chatting animation be shown assuming your not in battle).
To form a group, simply click on the player you wish to have join, and click on the "Invite to group" button as shown below.
.
Another feature about groups is whenever you go into a battle, you'll see a red wisp/spiral appear in the middle of the duel circle next to you. This means that you or another player is in a group. Even though 1 or 2 players who aren't in your group can join the battle, the final spot in the duel circle will always be reserved for a group member, and as such, non-group members won't be able to join the fight (summoning henchman or minions will not eliminate the reserved spot).
If you want to talk to everyone around you and not just your group members, then click this button in the chat window.
If you want to chat with people just in your group, then click this button.
You can tell someone's in your group because their nametag will appear light blue.
Private Chat
Private chat, also known as friend chat, allows you to chat with a friend anywhere in the spiral. To do so, simply select your online friend from your friend list and click on the private/text chat button. You can also right click on a person's name to send them a private message, regardless of whether or not they're on your friend's list. You'll then see purple text appear in the chat box with the name of the person your talking to, like so.
If your friend has menu chat, or you just want to talk to your friend, then select the menu chat button and you can communicate with them via menu chat. If you want to talk to someone who's not on your friend list or don't want to open your list to select the option, then just right click on the persons name, and you'll be able to send them a private message (private messages sent and received appear in a white box on the left side of the screen).
If you've recently received a Private Chat message from someone then you can also simply press the "R" button on your keyboard to reply back to them. Note that this only works while you're online, and once you log out to character selection, then you lose the ability to "R reply" back to them so keep that in mind when chatting with someone through Private Chat this way.
Thanks to dragontongue, henryiscool, Pear Gravelli, browni123456, JohnnyGreenDay, Sarah Deathmancer, my brother Nathan, Kingsisle (namely their official players guide), coolguy272, stressingout78 and Lady Hera for providing additional info to help improve the guide, I really appreciate it.
I hope this helps you all understand the different types of chat.
Thank you for your time.
