Our Wizard 101 correspondent Fallon Shadowblade takes a look at the new gardening system for Wizard 101, and gives some useful information for anyone interested in picking up the hobby.
Last week Wizard101 quietly released a fun new feature to the public test servers. While most of us were preparing for a grand holiday feast, Knigsisle Entertainment added a gardening element to Wizard101. Gardening allows you to plant seeds and grow plants in your dorm room or castle. You will be able to harvest these plants for splendid rewards!
To get started visit Moolinda Wu
, the Life School professor, in Ravenwood. Professor Wu will help you master the path to a greener thumb! Players must be at least Level 12, to access this feature. After talking with Professor Wu , you will meet Farley
, the new Garden Shop Vendor in Golem Court. He will teach you about gardening the Wizard101 way!
You will learn that you now have the ability to cultivate a magical garden inside your castle/dorm or outside your castle. Garden plots can be prepared outside using utility spells bought from Farley (or his cousins throughout the Spiral). Soil preparation will cost energy. KingsIsle has confirmed that there will not be another energy globe added to the game - you will share energy that is currently used in the Pet Pavilion.
If you want to plant indoors, you will need to purchase planters from the gardening vendor. There are many different sizes and types of planters, there is even enchanted soil. Some types of plants cannot be planted indoors so be sure to check
before attempting to plant.
You can purchase seeds from gardening vendors throughout the Spiral. You can also buy seeds in the Crowns shop, earn them as rewards while dueling, or even gain seeds while harvesting plants. You can purchase seeds such as Baby Carrots, Desparagus, Laugh-O-Dils, and even King Parsley!

One of my favorite seeds is the Boom Mushroom, once this plant has matured, the eyes will follow you as you walk around your garden. The first time I saw this, I couldn't stop laughing, no matter where I went the eyes followed..and Boom, Boom, Boom! As a Rank 1 plant, the harvest was nice as well. I gained reagents and gold each time I harvested.
As you continue to garden, you will earn experience through successfully harvesting plants. There are ten ranks of gardening from Novice to Grandmaster Gardener. The types of seeds you can plant may be restricted, requiring a minimum gardening rank. Additionally, some kinds of gardening equipment and gardening spells require a minimum gardening rank to use.
Plants can be encouraged to grow and thrive with the use of helpful spells to satisfy their needs such as water, sunlight, pollination, music and magic. Plants have likes and dislikes, conditions that can help or hinder their development. A plant will grow faster if it is surrounded by things it likes, and it will grow slower if it is surrounded by things it dislikes. You can learn what a plant likes or dislikes by using the Inspect spell on it.
From time to time you will need to keep your plants free from pests. Pests are annoying critters that will cause the plant to wilt and die if they are not dealt with. To get rid of pests, you will need to cast the appropriate pest fighting spell. Different types of pests require different types of spells. Pests are ranked, and require spells equal to or greater than their rank. If you have a high enough gardening rank, you can cast pest prevention spells to keep pests away from your garden. You can also buy pest fighting and pest prevention spells from certain trainers thoughout the Spiral, the Crowns Shop or you can earn them as rewards by dueling.
Each plant differs by how easy they are to garden, how long they take to grow and mature, and how long they live. Plants go through several stages as they grow: Seed > Seedling > Young Plant > Mature Plant > Elder Plant. Plants that reach maturity can be harvested for a variety of rewards. A single plant can be harvested repeatedly until it reaches the elder stage. Harvest yields rewards such as reagents, pet snack, gold, treasure cards, or other seeds. When a plant reaches the elder stage, it can be harvested only one more time. This harvest will yield the greatest rewards. After this, the elder plant will disappear. If your plant happens to wilt or die, you can use a spell to revive it. However, the plant will begin again as a seedling.
There is a new treasure card pack available in the Crowns Shop called Moolinda's Green Thumb Pack
. You can purchase this pack for Crowns and gain 7 gardening treasure cards that will help your garden flourish. Here's a peak at a few of the cards available in this new pack.
KingsIsle anticipates the Gardening feature to arrive in the Spiral before the end of the year. So keep testing and help work out the "bugs"...ZAP!
